1/17/10: Updated and posted to my blog.
I am taking this class because I am interested in the eLearning Certificate. I am almost done with the ETEC program and figured this would be an interesting topic. With so many changes happening in the educational field I think that more will be done to reach prospective students in far flung areas.
I still prefer face to face classes but this is probably due to the fact that online classes require more effort and work on the students part. I am pretty comfortable with online classes since I have taken many throughout my time in the ETEC program an feel pretty comfortable. I hope to get a better grasp of what it takes to create a good online training module and implement it into my work.
I agree that on-line classes are more work for the student. But the trade-off is not listening to the instructor (not Dr. Newberry of course
) read their powerpoint for 2 hours. Forget the kids I want dynamic engaging content too.
It seems like we are all having the same thought about the elearning certificate. I agree Jason but let’s not forget not having to drive up to school and sit in a lab and eat bad food during break.
I am learning more about online communities and the research that goes along with it. I am very interested in learning about new tools and I like playing with them too.
Labas,Angelica. That is hello in Lithuanian. I learned that when I was the high adventure director at Holcolm Valley Scout Ranch. A group from Lithuania visited us for two weeks while I was running the climbing tower. Unfortunately, that is all I remember of their language.
I am also interested in the e-learning certificate as professional development. Unlike you and Jason I am not in the master’s program so I am less skilled than some of you, but that’s why I’m taking this course. Maybe I’ll catch up by the end of the quarter.
Hi Angelica, I’m looking forward to your experience with on-line courses. So far I’m struggling to leave comments on blogs. Lucky for me I have a daughter in this class who can help me! My goal is also to figure out how to do on-line courses well – especially to build a sense of supportive community. If I manage to post this it will be a good start. Sue
I am also nearing the end of my ETEC program and am comfortable with the online format that I’ve experienced. I look forward to hearing more about what you have to say about balancing the instructor/student course load. I find the point about online classes needing more effort from the student interesting because I’ve actually felt the opposite.
On line classes can often be more work, but they do offer the chance to take classes without traveling to the main campus. Like you, I live in the valley (La Quinta)and dislike the travel in traffic each week. I also feel that you can learn a lot from your peers in online classes. Probably the most important part is that students like me can go over things as often as I need too and students like Jason can move on at his speed and neither of us has to suffer at the differences in our learning styles.
Hello Angelica,
I believe I have attended a few ETEC courses with you during the past quarters (ha-ha). I think it is great that the organization you are employed by will be offering free tax services to the low-income communities. You Go Girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God Bless,
Noemi/Mimi
I enjoy the freedom of on-line classes too. You would think with a super busy schedule, kids at home, and two jobs, I would enjoy them more. I tend to put off things that are due for my on line classes because I don’t get that weekly reminder of what I need to be done. I consider myself a social person and actually enjoy making the trip to the campus to listen to lectures. Look forward to learning from everyone in the class!
